Getting your drivers license

When you move to the states you have to re-take your drivers license. It is all more explained here: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#newdrivers, a bit better here: http://www.citi-relocation.com/driver.html and summarized here below
  1. Study http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/dmanual/default.html
  2. Apply for a learner permit. Form: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv44.pdf, take it to a DMV office: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/ethrum.htm#manh
  3. Pay the application fee and the driver license fee - around $52.50 - $55.00.
  4. Pass the vision test and the written test.
  5. Receive your permit. Here are the rules: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c41.htm
  6. Practice for your road test.
  7. Take a driver education course or a DMV-approved pre-licensing course and obtain a form MV-278. Driving Center of New York 1551 Second Avenue New York, NY 10028 1-212-396-1300 .
  8. Use your driver education certificate or pre-licensing course certificate to make an appointment for your test: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/rtphone.htm
  9. Pass your road test and receive your NYS driver license.

Step 2 - Get a Social Security Number

To get a social security number you need to go to the social security offices, for example:

Midtown Manhattan
237 W. 48th Street, 5th Floor (Btw. 8th Avenue and Broadway)
New York, NY 10036
By Train: 1/C/E to 50th Street Station

Bring your VISA and Passport, and expect to wait about a week. The SSN will be sent to you by snail mail, so make sure you know where you will live in about a week too.

Step 1 - Find a place to live

If you want to have a room mate I suggest this website which combines Google maps and Craigslist:

http://www.housingmaps.com/

If you want to live alone and have some money to spend, get an agent, it will cost about one month rent, and was worth it for me.
